LNER’s energy efficiency transformed with Eco Insight

The Challenge

London North Eastern Railway (LNER), a major British train company, set its A Better Journey pledge, to work hard to embed sustainability, equality and just practices into everything it does.

Prior to this pledge, LNER had no real-time data on their energy consumption, relying solely on monthly billing statements, making it difficult to identify areas for improvement and track progress towards sustainability goals.

LNER needed to gain real-time insights into energy usage and trends and establish baseline data for consumption across their depot in Aberdeen, in order to identify areas of high energy consumption that required immediate attention.

The Solution

LNER installed Eco Insight, a Unipart energy-monitoring product, to monitor, analyse and optimise energy consumption in real-time. 

Eco Insight energy monitoring and analytics technology was easily installed and integrated with LNER’s existing infrastructure.

The Impact

LNER’s installation of Eco Insight resulted in the following quantifiable benefits:

  • 6,395 kWh (£1,343) reduction in energy consumption annually following a switch off-strategy, after Eco Insight identified that warm and cool air equipment in server racks and staff areas were being left on continuously.
  • 403 kWh reduction in lighting waste annually following a switch-off strategy, after real-time consumption data identified lights left on unnecessarily in areas such as lighting channels, office spaces, and mess rooms.
  • Optimised server room efficiency following corrective actions, after data analysis identified energy inefficiencies in a major server room, where improper airflow management and unnecessary server processing contributed to excess energy consumption of 3,627 kWh.
