The Challenge

A Unipart Logistics site that packs and distributes over 800,000 items a month for an automotive customer, wanted to make significant energy efficiency improvements.

All Unipart Logistics sites operate on 100% renewable energy and are supported by LED lighting and solar panels that produce 46,000 kWh of energy per year, enough to run one of the warehouse units and feed electricity back into the grid.

The site has campus operations spread across nine buildings, a manual process of recording high-level data in spreadsheets, and a reliance on monthly invoices and billing statements. This meant that site management had no insight into usage, trends or variances in energy efficiency.

The Solution

All nine of the site’s units installed Eco Insight, a Unipart energy-monitoring product, to monitor, analyse and optimise energy consumption in real-time.

Automated Alerting and Proactive Monitoring was set up, and notified the team that:

  • A unit subletting to a third party for evening and weekend-use only was the root cause of disproportionately high consumption
  • Heating and lighting were being left on for prolonged periods when the occupier was not using the building
  • There were anomalies with the energy associated with lighting on site, leading to an immediate investigation and several LED sensors being identified as faulty and replaced.

The Impact

The installation of Eco Insight resulted in the following benefits:

  • 60% decrease in energy consumption
  • £2,340 annual cost saving
  • Lighting Optimisation: Lights were reprogrammed to shut off outside operating hours automatically
  • Enhanced Security Protocols: Security personnel were instructed to conduct a final check and turn off any remaining lights at the end of each workday.
Eco Insight's combination of automated alerting, real-time data analysis and user-friendly control systems led to us reducing energy consumption on our warehouse campus by 60%, achieving significant cost savings and making huge steps towards operational sustainability.
