The Challenge

Unipart Construction Technologies collaborated with leading foundation and structural frame specialists to create a building that showcases a platform based approach for healthcare applications.

This research and development project, supported by the NHS for the New Hospital Programme was designed to deliver a healthcare demonstrator building created using modern, innovative new technologies that could deliver future buildings faster, better and greener than ever before.

The Solution

UCT designed, delivered and installed slim-floor beams and blade columns in collaboration with PCE Ltd, and modular pile cap foundations with Roger Bullivant, showcasing the versatility and breadth of capability our MRS technology offers.

The total programme consisted of 1 month.

The application of MRS within the Healthcare Sandpit was a great success. The simplicity and accuracy of install alongside the efficiency of the design was really impressive. There are clear opportunities for further use. From a programme and quality perspective the use of MRS in the right context is a no brainer.

Conclusion from Balfour Beatty

166%

Time saving on-site vs traditional foundation methods

The Impact

  • MRS technology facilitates slimmer column and beam sections to reduce embodied carbon
  • Pre-installed shuttering, and modular frames provided a 166% time saving on-site vs traditional foundation methods. Installation time was reduced from four hours to build and place two cages to one hour to place four cages
  • Lifting points/interfaces with other structural components accurately positioned and controlled
  • Laser cut precision guarantees concrete cover is achieved
